Hendley Market Lofts,
an Historic Landmark of Galveston Island

Built between 1855 and 1859, the Hendley Building was Galveston's first commercial landmark and a beacon of progress. In 1880, it became the first home of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Galveston Engineer Office, where Major Samuel M. Mansfield directed vital river and harbor improvements along the Texas Gulf Coast. Until 1888, the Army Engineers infused the building with a legacy that remains woven into the fabric of Galveston's history.
